# Transfer Layers

Turn Rhino® layers into families and subcategories

If your model is already organised by layers, **Transfer** turns that structure into BEAM data in one step. It works on every object in the document.

{% hint style="info" %}
Transfer is available on Windows only.
{% endhint %}

## Run a transfer

1. Click **T** on the [panel](/beam/beam-for-rhinoceros/using-rhino-beam.md#tool-row).
2. Choose the options below.
3. Click **OK**.

BEAM reports how many layers it transferred.

## Options

### Layer as Family Names

Assigns each object to a family named after its layer. Pick how the name is built:

| Option | Family name | Example for an object on `Facade::Panels::Glass` |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------ |
| **Top Layer**         | The top-level layer                  | `Facade`                                         |
| **Layer**             | The object's own layer               | `Glass`                                          |
| **Top Layer + Layer** | The full layer path, joined with `-` | `Facade-Panels-Glass`                            |

### Layers as Subcategories

Sets each object's subcategory to the name of its layer. This also applies to objects inside block definitions.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Layer names with any of these characters are skipped: ``\ : { } [ ] | ; < > ? ` ~ " /``. BEAM lists them at the end.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="success" %}
Clean up your layer structure first. A clear hierarchy gives clear family names.
{% endhint %}
